Career pathways made easy with online, interactive mapping tool

The Challenge

The Sequoias Adult Education Consortium (SAEC) set out to better understand the adult education needs of its region and to identify priorities by conducting research on employment trends and opportunities, the provision of adult education services, by program area, and demographic characteristics of the immediate and surrounding regions. As part of the research, the consortium surveyed educators who offer adult education programs, as well as employers, to identify needs in the immediate and surrounding regions. A need for better-aligned programs with easy-to-understand career pathways was determined to be a regional priority based on direct response data from survey participants, and by focus-group analysis of other regional data.

The Solution

To address the need, the consortium decided to develop a web-based mapping tool that outlines career pathways. A team of subject-matter experts, including teachers, faculty and administrators familiar with the region’s health care and English as a second language (ESL) offerings, met and mapped out available career pathways that were then used to develop an interactive online Pathway Mapping Tool that walks students through a pathway by asking questions. Interactive pathways were developed for adult secondary education; agriculture; automotive and transportation; business; computer science; ESL; food services; health care; manufacturing and media arts.

The Pathway Mapping Tool has provided guidance staff with a quick go-to tool for assisting students in establishing educational goals and charting the best path to reach those goals. It also serves as a resource for students to explore options and make decisions about their educational plans.
