Meet Sam

Program Area(s): Workforce Re-entry

The Challenge

When Sam (name changed for privacy) was 17 years old, he was involved in a crime which resulted in him serving a thirty-year prison sentence. During his time of incarceration, Sam was allowed to learn basic skills for janitorial and production work. Sam was released from prison in the Spring of 2017 as a 48-year-old man with no direction, limited skills, and no real employment history.

The Solution

The Placer School for Adults Career Center provided training through the “Get Hired Skills” for Sam. The Career Center staff assisted him with his resume, cover letter and interview coaching. A collaboration between PSA and Capstone Logistics gave Sam the opportunity to attend a Capstone “Open Interview” event held at the PSA Career Center. After Sam’s interview, the Capstone manager decided to pursue him as a future employee for their company. Sam was hired as a full time Freight Handler. He continues to work for Capstone, excelling in his new career.

Both the creation of partnerships with companies and the helpful Career Center resources provided Sam an opportunity to become a successful member of his community. These important partnerships, coupled with the job readiness skills, come together for the purpose of preparing adults for job placement at reputable companies.
