Meet NoemÍ

Program Area(s): Adult Basic & Secondary Education, English as a Second Language & Citizenship

The Challenge

Ever since she was a little girl growing up in Mexico, NoemÍ wanted to be a teacher. However, her dream has twice been put on hold. First, she was unable to afford the cost of college tuition after completing college prep classes in Mexico. She then worked for a Mexican credit union for five years before immigrating to southern California. She and her two-year-old daughter came to join her husband, who had moved earlier. She took ESL classes for five months, but had to drop out because of the birth of her son.

The Solution

In 2015, NoemÍ and her family moved to Santa Rosa where she was able to pursue her dream with the right balance of affordability, access, and timing. She returned to adult school at Santa Rosa Junior College and completed the high school equivalency program in just two months. NoemÍ is currently a sophomore at Santa Rosa Junior College where she receives financial aid to help cover the cost of her education.

NoemÍ plans to transfer to Sonoma State University and become a teacher by 2022. NoemÍ already gives back to the community by tutoring farm workers in the SRJC high school equivalency program where she earned her diploma. She still dreams about teaching. “I want to be in front of the classroom,” she says. “And I want the children to remember me with the same affection that I remember my teachers.”
