Meet Miriam

Program Area(s): Adult Basic & Secondary Education

The Challenge

Miriam was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. Her family migrated to America when she was 4 years old, and she had to quickly adapt to American culture and learn English. She attended Clay Elementary School and Kingsburg High School. Miriam dropped out of high school to work and raise her son.

The Solution

She enrolled at Kings Canyon Adult School and graduated with her high school diploma in 2013. Miriam states, "I was a single mom at the time but attending this school helped me get through my education and life a lot more smoothly. I enjoyed attending Kings Canyon Adult School because teachers and staff were interested in my success."

Upon her completion at Kings Canyon Adult School, Miriam transferred and completed an associate degree in liberal studies at Reedley College. With the completion of her AS degree, she is now enrolled and attending Fresno Pacific University to become a social worker.

The direct results for the 27-year-old Miriam were that she:

1. Earned a high school diploma.
2. Transferred and earned an associate degree at Reedley College.
3. Transferred and now is attending Fresno Pacific University (FPU), pursuing a degree in social work.
4. Is working for Kings Canyon Unified School District as a substitute while attending FPU.
